Logical Antithesis

Girls in Gaming (permalink)

No, this isn’t about the girls who make games, or the girls who play games … this is about the digital girls in games. I’ve always had the opinion that a game that used girls in provocative ways, the ones that are obviously using sex to sell, are compensating for their own lack of entertainment.

First of all, I’m not against females being portrayed in games. What I’m against is sex in games, and the usage of sex to sell games. An obvious example would be most modern games. However, I’ll just pick on RPGs for a moment.

Ever noticed the RPG with the “chainmail bikini” concept? That less armor is more? An unacceptable number of games take this approach, making the women so scantily clad that it’s hard to tell if they’re actually wearing anything; and if they are wearing something, then it is quite risque. A lot of times these games are little more than a brief glimmer in the market, but sometimes they make it big. It is undeniable: a great many males buy these games just for the immodest women.

A new upcoming game that I would really love to play, but cannot due to this issue, is Red Alert 3. Red Alert 2 had enough immodesty in the FMV sequences, but now that’s been tripled with each faction having their own torso-showing heroine.

It’s been my personal opinion that a lot of publishers and gaming houses cover their inadequate games up by perfect looking models that wear very revealing clothes. Or, they simply put in the immodesty to give their sales a boost. Either tactic is absolutely unacceptable in my mind.

I know that I resent the latent immodesty in modern games for more reasons than this. The Old Testament gave laws for modesty that reached from the ankles to the neck and elbows—you figure out how much modern fashion breaks these rules. I don’t think we need to be that restrictive, but that it certainly shows how much we’ve fallen from the old standards.

Now, I’m not going to go on and on about this, but it would sure be nice if modern game designers gave those of us who like modesty an option to have it in a game! It would be nice to have modesty in a game, instead of those 3D harlots we frequently see in them … and (sadly) see emulated in real life.
